There has been some consternation regarding how to assign and keep track of the various Independent Studies, Research Projects, and Selected Topics.  The format below is intended to be a guide for students and professors to follow when they agree to conduct and independent study or selected topics class.

  1. Statement of the Work to be accomplished.  A brief statement of the work that will be accomplished by this project, i.e., an in-depth look at the hiring procedures for last year’s Management majors.
  2. Facts bearing on the project/valid assumptions.  Here we are looking for any relevant facts or assumptions that will have a positive or negative impact on the results of the project.
  3. Discussion.  A statement of the meeting times and report periods required for the project.  An explanation of the periodic reporting procedure and when the final report is due to the professor.
  4. Conclusion/Findings.  What was accomplished by this research project?  Is there a follow-up project needed?  Provide any deliverables as attachments/annexes.
  5. Report/Recommendation.  If there is a final report required and if there will be recommendations expected at the end of the report.

We will expect that an initial meeting will take place between the professor and the student involved and that the parameters of the project will be set in place.  The student will be expected to use the above format and write the specifics of the project.  After obtaining approval from the professor, the student will submit the initial report detailing the procedures that will be followed, through the student advisor, to the associate dean.
