Academic Advising Description/Definition

Academic advising is an educational process that, by intention and design, facilitates students’ understanding of the meaning and purpose of higher education and fosters their intellectual and personal development toward academic success and lifelong learning. (NACADA, 2004)

In the School of Business at Clayton State University, academic and career advisement is a joint responsibility shared by the Advisor and Student. Both work together to ensure that educational and career goals are met in a timely fashion.  Both the student and the advisor have clear responsibilities for ensuring the advising partnership is successful.

Advisor’s Responsibilities

§        To provide information about, and assist students with, college policies, regulations, programs, and procedures.

§        To keep regular office hours and be adequately available to meet with students.

§        To offer advice on selecting courses and to assist students in developing an academic plan that satisfies degree requirements.

§        To assist students in developing and education plan that is consistent with each student’s abilities and interests. (course loads, academic background, program demands, life commitments, etc.)

§        To be a responsive listener and to refer students to appropriate support services within the college.

§        To discuss students’ academic performance and the implications of their performance for the undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional programs students desires to pursue.

§        To respect the student’s right to privacy of educational records.

§        To have and be familiar with the Academic Catalog, the Course Schedule and their student record in DUCK.

§        To prepare a list of courses, questions or concerns before each meeting.

§        To gather all relevant decision-making information that will assist with the advisement appointment.

§        To seek resources that will assist them in making academic and career decisions.

§        To ask questions and be knowledgeable about university and school procedures, policies and requirements.

§        To be familiar with their degree requirements.

§        To be aware of the prerequisites and grade requirements for each course.

§        To follow college procedures for course registration and adjustments.

§        To inform an advisor or the Dean's Office immediately whenever a serious problem (medical, financial, personal) disrupts the student’s ability to attend classes or interferes with one’s ability to focus on his/her education.

§        To make final decisions and be actively responsible for their academic career.
